September marks the last month that conifer hedges can be safely trimmed to keep them in shape through the winter months. Any later and they are susceptible to dying back leaving brown patches.
Most deciduous hedges such as beech and hawthorn can be safely cut this month as they are unlikely to produce much new growth.
Always ensure the blades on the hedge cutter are sharp and clean to avoid damage to the plants as well as introducing disease.
